Mihran is the owner of Mamajoun, an Armenian lahmajoun restaurant in Scarborough. But he didn’t start his career as a restauranteur. Rather, he was a musician, playing and touring with a punk rock band.
To save money, the band would camp while they toured instead of staying in hotels, and Mihran would often cook their meals. When he wasn’t on tour, he would work in all sorts of restaurants, and after his band broke up, he opened his own.
Mihran was following in his grandfather’s footsteps by opening a restaurant for Lahmajoun, an Armenian flatbread. A member of the first generation of his family born in Canada, Mihran’s grandparents lived in Syria, and his parents were both born in Lebanon, before they were married in Canada.
The Armenian community in Toronto has been integral to Mihran’s success with Mamajoun, by sharing his food with their friends and coworkers, expanding the community who can enjoy his food.
